Are Soy Benefits and Nutritional Claims Hype or Facts?

It is a fact that the protein derived from 'Soybeans' is often used to replace animal proteins in an individual’s diet. Soybeans belonging to the family of legumes are both cholesterol free and low in saturated fat. Not only do they have all the essential amino acids, they are also a terrific source of fiber, calcium, B vitamins, zinc and iron.

People use soy products to prevent or treat a variety of health conditions, including high cholesterol levels, menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, osteoporosis, memory problems, high blood pressure, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.

Of late research is indicating that soy protein may help in reducing serum concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) & trigylcerides. The FDA has recently allowed limited health claims to be made in favor of soy protein as an alternate protein that can provide certain nutritional benefits.

But are all claims being made accurate?

YOGA is a form of exercise that is based on several scientific principles and is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning yoke, to unite or join. In yoga, joining or integrating involves all aspects of the individual - body with mind and mind with soul, to achieve a balanced & productive life.

There are many different types of yoga from gentle to strenuous as well as a new form called power yoga that helps improve circulation in the body from head to toe.

Yoga founded by Patanjali is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than three thousand years ago. Its purpose is to help the body optimize its strength and performance through controlled moves. Yoga can help extend life by making it healthier and more productive.

Yoga provides several additional benefits for the body, structural and functional ones. On the structural level – Yoga helps in aligning vertebrae, increasing flexibility and strengthening muscles, simultaneously on the functional level - the internal organs get toned and rejuvenated; the epidermal, digestive, lymphatic, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems are purified of toxins and waste matter; the nervous and endocrine systems are balanced and toned; and brain cells are nourished and stimulated.

Overall benefits of yoga are increased mental clarity, emotional stability, and a greater sense of overall wellbeing.

Research has shown that yoga can help alleviate symptoms in people dealing with varying health issues such as back pain, chronic headaches, sleeplessness, obesity, neck aches, upset stomach, anxiety, depression and high blood pressure.

5 Good Health Tips

   1. A Good Breakfast - Start your day these three healthy words. Breakfast fills your "empty tank" to get you going after a long night without food. And it can help you do better in school. Whether it’s cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, or whole-wheat toast with fruit jelly, yogurt with fruit, idli sambhar, or even last night's vegetable with two rotis!
   2. Snack smart Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or low-fat yogurt and raisins, or some dry cereal. Eat smart at other meals - cookies, chips and candy are OK for rare snacking and then too always watch your portion.
   3. Balance your food choices – Have you heard the phrase – Too much of a good thing! Well! Its true. You don't have to give up favorite foods like pizzas, French fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. A home made pizza with fresh tomatoes and vegetables and low fat cheese is great, baked fries, or ice cream in moderation is always a good option. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron and calcium from a variety of foods. Balancing food choices so you get the right proportions as indicated in USDA the Food Guide Pyramid and checking out the Nutrition Facts Panel on food items you buy will help you get all the nutrition your body needs.
   4. Eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables. These foods give you carbohydrates for energy, plus vitamins, minerals and fiber for a well functioning body. Try breads such as whole-wheat, bajra and methi rotis. Bananas, strawberries, blueberries and melons are amazing options. When enjoying vegetables go for freshly washed salads or on a sandwich or lightly steamed.
   5. Move It! It's easy to plan physical activities into your daily routine, at work and at home – just keep active. Walk, bike or jog to meet friends. Take a 10- minute activity break every hour while you read in the evenings, or do homework. Avoid watching TV for extended periods. Climb stairs at work instead of taking an elevator. All you need are 30 minutes every day, perhaps even broken up into 3 intense 10-minute sessions.

These good health tips are simple not just in language but simple to follow. Work them into your daily schedule and reap the benefits of having more energy and a healthier body.

How to get a Good Night Sleep

Are you getting enough sleep? If not, you are not alone. A recent study has found that one in every two Indians (46 per cent) sleeps less than six hours. A busy work schedule, a hectic social life, household chores and children’s worries leave little time for sleep. Modern life builds up so much stress and anxiety that when we do get to bed, most of us find it difficult to sleep well.
Adults need at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night, to perform optimally. Children need even more sleep. Less sleep causes morning headaches and daytime fatigue, leading to poor concentration and performance.
Insomnia includes the inability to sleep, frequent awakenings during the night and not being able to go back to sleep, or waking up too early. Women are more likely to suffer from chronic insomnia – the ratio is about two women to one man. Working women, in particular, build up a large sleep debt over the years.
To a large extent, we can control the quantity and quality of our sleep. The key to a restful night’s sleep is to calm down your brain rather than rev it up.
What you eat affects how you sleep. Some food slows down nerve traffic and calms the brain and contributes towards a restful sleep; such food are called sleepers. Other perk up the brain and keep you awake; such food are called wakers.
Sleepers contain tryptophan, an amino acid that makes up protein, which produces the sleep – inducing substances, serotonin and melatonin. Food that contains tryptophan or make more tryptophan available to the brain make us sleepy.
Ideal sleepers are food which contains moderate amounts of carbohydrate stimulates the release of insulin which clears amino acids that compete with tryptophan making it more available to the brain. At the same time, protein contributes tryptophan directly to the brain.
Great snooze food includes; dairy products (paneer, cheese, milk and curd), meat, poultry or seafood, whole grains vegetables and pulses (including soyabeans).
Indian dinners usually have a fair share of these types of food. However, our traditional cooking practices include a lot of fat and spices, both of which in terferes with sleep.
Calcium helps the brain use tryptophan; this explains the soporific effect of a glass of milk at bedtime. Foods containing caffeine such as tea, coffee, colas and chocolates are wakers. a high-protein meal without carbohydrates contains the amino acid, tyrosine, which perks up the brain.
An all carbohydrate snack, especially one high in sugar, is less likely to help you sleep. It will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Later, when blood sugar drops too low, you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep. Also, you will miss out on the sleep-inducing effects of tryptophan.

Libya rebels 'capture Misrata airport'

Libyan rebels say they have captured Misrata airport, driving back troops loyal to Col Muammar Gaddafi.

Hundreds of rebels were celebrating in the streets after pro-Gaddafi forces fled, leaving behind tanks that were set on fire, witnesses said.

Government forces have been pounding the western city, which remains largely under rebel control, for weeks.

Its port has become a lifeline for supplying civilians and for evacuating wounded people fleeing the fighting.

Meanwhile, explosions were reported in the capital Tripoli on Wednesday, after Nato said its planes had carried out 6,000 missions over Libya since it assumed command of military operations there at the end of March.

The air strikes have helped secure rebels in their strongholds in eastern Libya, but observers say it remains unclear to what extent they have loosened Col Gaddafi's grip on on the west of the country.
Bodies in street

Witnesses said Misrata airport fell after hours of fighting between rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces overnight.

Misrata's airport has been an important base for Col Gaddafi's forces and heavy weapons during the long siege of the city and the heavy bombardments that have accompanied it.

During the past few days, rebels have been making a big push to break the siege, and heavy fighting has been reported around the airport south of the city. A French reporter at the airport said it had been captured, along with a number of government tanks, but that couldn't be confirmed by the rebel's chief military spokesman - a fact that may underline the poor communications that have plagued Libya's fragmented revolutionaries.

It is probably too soon to consider whether the airport can be used to bring supplies - civilian or military - into Misrata. Col Gaddafi's forces have managed, despite intensified Nato air raids, to keep hold of long-range weapons with a range of more than 30km (20 miles).

The broader question is whether the rebels can now hold onto both the airport, and a larger swathe of territory recently captured on the western side of the city. The next few days should offer some insights into the resilience of pro-Gaddafi forces in the area, and their determination to recapture the only fully "liberated" chunk of western Libya.

The bodies of pro-government forces could be seen lying in the street as the rebels celebrated their victory, correspondents said. A dozen rebels were said to have been wounded in the fighting.

Col Ahmed Bani, a spokesmen for the rebel leadership in Benghazi, told the BBC that as well as taking the airport, "revolutionary forces" now controlled Misrata.

As well as burning government tanks, the rebels had captured other weaponry from the regime troops, he said.

Libya's third-largest city, Misrata is the only significant western rebel holdout, and is strategically important because of its deep-sea port.

Though the rebels are said to be better organised than those in eastern Libya, and have, for example, set up a network of makeshift arms factories, their campaign is still an improvised affair.

Government forces have sown anti-shipping mines off the harbour, used Russian-made Grad rockets to scatter anti-vehicle mines in the port, and set fuel storage tanks ablaze with missile strikes, according to rebels and human rights groups.

Pro-Gaddafi troops in civilian areas are also using Spanish-made cluster bombs, Human Rights Watch and other agencies say.

Libya's government says militants inspired by al-Qaeda are fighting with rebel forces in Misrata.

It says it is trying to protect civilians from rebels, and that doctors in the city were "trying to give a bad image of Misrata" to encourage more direct Nato intervention.

Health Food - How To Improve Your Health With Healthy Eating

Safe food with good nutritional value is important to every person's health. Eating a balanced diet comprised of good nutritious products is one of the best ways to protect and promote your health. Good food should be high on vitamins and minerals and low on saturated fat, chemicals, additives and antibiotics. There are several simple guidelines to follow in order to protect and improve your health and to live longer and more satisfying life. The following are some strategies I found to be most beneficial for my health:

1. Limit your calorie intake to what you need for one day. Remember that if you consume more calories than needed, the extra calories will be converted to fat. The higher your body fat, the bigger your craving for food will be.
2. Live a healthy lifestyle. Move a lot and do some exercise, it is even more important than eating healthy food. There is nothing worse than not having any exercise and living a stagnant life. The guy who created the movie "Supersize me" did exactly that, but he conveniently forgot to mention it in the movie, so as to blame his deteriorated health on the fast food. Don't get me wrong, I am not rooting for the fast food, but I am sure that if you burn a lot of calories through exercise you can get away with some amount of not-so-healthy food in your diet. The guy from "Supersize me" was probably sitting on his bum for a month and eating Big Macs all day. So, where is the news in the story? It would be a news if the guys from McDonalds were force-feeding him. I absolutely believe that if you do not move and burn the calories, any kind of food can make you fat.
3. Limit your intake of pop and other sugary drinks. You don't need the huge calorie bomb that is inside of them. Pop made with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame are even worse.
4. Avoid trans fats and saturated fats. Trans fats are mostly found in hydrogenated oils, and saturated fat is the fat found mostly in meat.
5. Avoid deep-fried foods. Instead, choose food that has been cooked by a healthy cooking method.
6. Alcohol contains a lot of empty calories. Try to consume it only occasionally, if at all.
7. Smoking is a sure sign that a person is not physically active, therefore not in the best of health. Smoking is not only bad for your lungs, but also for your heart and sexual life.
8. Do not let yourself be fooled by the new fancy diet on the market. It is a billion dollar business, and the guys out there don't really care for your health. All they care about is to have a good laugh on the way to the bank. The best advice on dieting I can give you is limit your calorie intake to be less than the calories you burn in a day, and have an active lifestyle.
9. Incorporate more Mediterranean products in your diet. Some examples are: olive oil, olives, artichokes, basil pesto, eggplant, sun-dried tomato, zucchini, tomatoes, ricotta cheese, fresh herbs, fish and pasta (not cream-based pastas such as Alfredo which is full of fat. I have always wondered in the restaurant how somebody can eat that).
10. Try to eat three regular meals a day and avoid snacking in-between. Instead drink more water that has been purified by reverse osmosis or distilled. Some kinds of bottled water have fluoride added to them and I don't recommend them for that reason.
11. Take extra vitamin and mineral supplements but keep in mind that they alone cannot substitute the real vitamins from the fruits and vegetables. The best vitamin supplements are the non-synthetic variety, extracted from whole organic foods. They are usually harder to find and a lot more expensive, but can be found in some health food stores.
12. When cooking fruits and vegetables choose a cooking method that will best preserve the vitamins in the food.
13. If the food place that caters for you at your job does not provide good nutritious food choices, consider brown-bagging some healthy sandwich and some fruits for lunch. This way you can even save some money as added benefit on top of preserving your health.
14. Find out what fruit and vegetables are in season and buy them a lot. By buying what is in season you will save money and enjoy the freshest and most healthy food available on the market.
15. My last advice is definitely the most important one, so listen carefully - DO NOT ever consume aspartame, MSG (monosodium glutamate) and fluoride (yes, I mean fluoride, the chemical that they say is good for your teeth). For the first two you know what to do, the third one is a little bit more difficult to eliminate, but a reverse osmosis filter can remove it from your water supply. The three of those are vary dangerous neuro-toxins.
I hope that my tips will be helpful and beneficial for your daily life. GOOD LUCK.

My Best Health Tips

These are tips I have learned over the years from reading and speaking with the various nutritionists I have come in contact with. If you incorporate these tips into your daily life you will be amazed at how much better you will feel.

Buy Flaxseed Meal – Add ¼ cup to your smoothie and get a full days recommended amount of fiber.

Drink a smoothie once a day and add frozen fruit, whole food greens, flaxseed meal, and protein powder (and whatever else you desire). This superdrink is loaded with so many nutrients you need everyday.

My Basic Supplements – I always have a supply of these supplements as they are the most important ones for me. I don’t want to take the chance of not getting enough of them through food.
Calcium and Magnesium – Vitamin C – Omega 3 – Multi – D3

Eat good food all throughout the day every 2-4 hrs. I don’t NOT eat to stay slim I eat good food in small doses without going too long in-between meals or snacks.
(This might be hard for some people who are used to the huge meals. You will fight with yourself at first but eventually your tummy will shrink and not desire the large portions you are used to feeding it.)

Exercise Regularly – If you are not used to doing anything, then just walk, you will be moving your body and getting everything inside flowing. If you are the type to start and stop, start and stop write down a plan to help you follow through, aim for something realistic like 3-4 days a week.

Get at least 7 hrs of sleep. This is the time your body repairs, heals, takes the time it needs to make you the best you
